September, October (More Or Less)

Listening to: Felt
A Tribute To Rosie Perez

-The boys take first place at the prefectural track & field meet. The annual meet is a pretty big deal, as the entire student body skips class for the day to cheer the team on. The events start at 9:00 in the morning and run until 6:00 pm or so, at which point everyone is sunburned beyond recognition and entering the early stages of dehydration. The vice-principal and I severely mistime a high five in our excitement when the winners are announced. Awkward, but everyone (from our school) goes home happy.

-A typhoon warning cancels the first day of school back from summer break. The scene at the supermarket is pretty wild. I stock up on beer and ice cream while everyone around me buys real groceries.

-The cat is pretty good about not chewing on my stuff, but he did go to town on my photo album and my high school yearbook. I can only conclude the following: HE FEEDS ON MEMORIES.

-I want to go to the beach, but it seriously rains every weekend and only on the weekends.

-One of the 3rd year students shows up to school in a pair of the fakest 6 Rings that I've ever seen. I would laugh at him, but that would be very unbecoming of me. As a teacher, not as a sneaker collector.

-I threw some serious change at a brand new suit, and the cat promptly jumps on my back and claws the shit out of it.

-We decided to check out the old haunted hotel remains near my village. The story is that some millionaire decided to build a hotel on sacred grounds near an old castle ruin, but people mysteriously started dying during construction and it never got completed. Weird stuff inside: no rooms looking alike in spite of the fact that it's a hotel, stairways that lead to nowhere, other stairways that inexplicably turn into ramps, creepy boiler rooms, etc. The layout to the place is so bizarre that we get lost and have to jump out of windows and hop rooftops to escape.

-Today's vocabulary test has the words "salmon" and "jazz" on it. I have to stop myself from giving bonus points to the kid who somehow manages to misspell them "semen" and "jizz." Unbelievable.

-Went to my first Okinawan style wedding. Kind of like a real dapper Halloween party where only the bride and groom dress up and everybody gives them treats. In the form of money.

-I want a pair of KDIIs. I have dreams about those. Can't believe I slept on the Creamsicles. Can't believe I didn't pick up the Scoring Titles. Can't believe I didn't look harder for the All-Stars. Sometimes I think of flying to the states just to see if Foot Locker still has any KDIIs in stock. Sometimes when I get really hungry, I think, "Man, I wish had a pair of KDIIs." Then I order a pizza. Sometimes I start believing in Santa again because I've been pretty good this year and he might hook me up with some KDIIs. Sometimes I consider selling my ride and buying like 100 pairs of KDIIs. If I ever found a magic lamp, I think I'd wish for a pair of KDIIs. Three times in a row.

-The seasonal sandwiches at McDonald's here are off the charts. There's a chicken fondue that makes my heart all warm and fuzzy.

-You want to know what my new hobby is? Watching the Los Angeles Clippers bench whenever Blake Griffin or Eric Gordon dunk on someone. I've never seen grown men quite so excited.

-We finally find a new home for the cat, and I in turn find that I miss having the little guy around quite a bit. I do discover that I'm no longer picking kitty litter out of my socks, which I suppose I could get used to.

Homesick @ English Camp 2K10

Day 1 - Decided to leave the iPod and DS at home this year. Just two things that I won't have the time to use. • Good group of kids. Not all of them are totally into English, but they try in the classroom and follow directions outside of it. Not too much more you can ask for. • I forgot to pack deodorant. That's probably the single worst thing that I could have forgotten. • No shower in my room, so I use the large public bathing area in the middle of the night after everyone has gone to sleep. I'm not ashamed to admit that this is somewhat frightening.

Day 2 - There's apparently a typhoon approaching, which is bad news because all of our activities were meant to be played outside. • I don't mind the rain so much, but this wind keeps blowing the screen doors off their hinges. • There's a 6th grader here that speaks really perfect English with a British accent. It's really adorable, like having a tiny Harry Potter character around all day. Turns out that she studied overseas in England for a year, which explains a lot. • Who doesn't love Twister?

Day 3 - Nothing like playing table tennis against elementary school kids to make you feel like you're much better at it than you actually are. • We're doing a lot of dancing this year. Times like these, I wish I went to one of those schools where the students actually learned the "Electric Slide" in P.E.

Day 4 - The weather finally clears up. • The facility this year has no gym, so we walk 45 minutes or so to the community rec center so that the kids can play some volleyball and basketball. • Forgot my gym shoes again, so I play ball for a good hour in my socks. I promptly proceed to open up all the blisters that I got last night from dancing "Cotton-Eyed Joe" with the kids.

Day 5 - Aya accidentally calls me "Dad," which is kind of depressing. • Some of the junior high boys engage in an impromptu session of hallway bowling, using a basketball and a bunch of plastic bottles as pins. I should probably stop them, but I opt to bowl a few frames instead. • The students are playing tag when Ryo - who is as tall as I am and probably weighs about 175, 180 - takes out one of the younger elementary boys with a shoulder. The kid stays down on the ground for 5 minutes or so, but he'd eventually be okay. I talk to Ryo and the junior high boys about how it's their responsibility to be looking after the younger kids, not hurting them, which is something they already know, but also something that I'm obligated to say when people start getting hurt. Ah well, we almost managed to make it 4 and a half days without an incident. • I walk into the recreational room and see Ryo teaching some table tennis tricks to a couple of the elementary kids (including his victim from this afternoon). You can tell that it isn't necessarily his idea of fun, but he makes the effort nonetheless, which makes me really proud.

Day 6 - ULTIMATE FRISBEE. • Dai falls asleep in the middle of the afternoon, so everyone goes to town on his face with stamps and stickers. I'd step in, but it's not like they're sticking carrots up his ass or anything. As long as it washes off or peels off before class, it's fine by me. • Hide shows up at my door in the middle of the night because he's having some sort of a panic attack. It's kind of hard to discern what is actually bothering him because his eyes are constantly darting around the room and he isn't particularly good about answering questions. Hide is actually one of the few students attending camp from my school. I really like the kid a lot, but he's always falling down and getting hurt, or losing his glasses, or seeing spirits, or something. Maybe I'm overstating our relationship because I see him at school every day, but it's kind of like having a really weird nephew.

Day 7 - If I were a Sesame Street character, I'd apparently be Grover. • Ultimate frisbee again, because it's the most fun shit ever. • The kids learned that World Cup song "Wavin' Flag" in class, and the damn thing has been stuck in my head for the past three days. Maybe I should have brought my iPod after all. • Loco Moco for dinner, which makes me a little happy. A lot of the kids are happy for me, which is kind of cute.

Day 8 - Aquarium day, which the students are excited for because they get to look at fish and not study English for a change. • Usually the kids fall asleep on the bus ride back, but everyone's knocked out on the ride over this year. • I'm looking for a nice little memento at the gift shop, when Kurisu shows up next to me with blood shooting out of his nose. That sort of sums up what my entire week has been like.

Day 9 - Breakfast, last class, graduation, lunch, goodbyes. • I take a nap as soon as I get home, and fittingly, I dream of screaming children. • ESL camp. Nothing quite like it.

Need A Break, Get A Breakthrough

Listening to:
The Rocket Summer
Of Men And Angels

The academic year finally wrapped up the other day, and in a somewhat odd decision (at least to me), the teachers decided that it would be a good idea to run to the year end party. Run, as in not employ the use of vehicles. The hotel that the party was being held at was a good 9 kilometers away - 5 and 1/2 miles or so - which prompted me, perhaps as the lone American member of the staff, to wonder why we didn't just drive there like the modern human beings that we were. After all, what was the point of going on a 9 km run immediately before having to get spruced up and dapper for a fancy dinner? But as it usually is with Japanese folks, this wasn't necessarily about comfort or efficiency, but about taking advantage of an opportunity to bond with one another. Aside from my left kneecap nearly crumbling to dust during the final stretch, it was a good time. We laughed a lot, stopped a lot of traffic, almost died a few times, but made it to the end mostly intact. Personally? I'd much rather drive, but I suppose that I'm willing to hoof it from time to time as long as it means a little something.

26 In Pics

Unexpectedly got saddled with a couple of extra classes first thing in the morning (surprise!), but when I greet 2年5組 with the usual "Good morning everyone!" bit, they answer with "Happy birthday Ma-ka-su!" I'm not entirely sure how they all know, but they do.

Jun comes to the teachers' office before lunch and gives me a high five and a small plastic bag with Mickey Mouse on it. The cookie inside is broken, but it's still one of the sweetest little gestures ever.

Thought about breaking out the Atlantic IIs to celebrate the occasion, but decided to go stealth instead. The 1/2 Cents are actually a lot more comfortable than I imagined they'd be.

Kept it easy on a weekday like an old man should. Japan's interpretation of a "Large" pizza is akin to a personal pan back home, but size discrepancy is nothing that a couple of Coronas and an evening with your favorite person in the world can't set right.

Earthquake

Listening to:
東京事変
スポーツ

Woke up this morning at 5:30 thanks to a pretty big earthquake. It was reportedly a magnitude 6.9 quake that lasted for about 30 seconds. Although 30 seconds probably doesn't seem like a long time in print, it honestly feels like an eternity when you're waiting for the roof to cave in on you. My girlfriend's cell phone apparently has some sort of a natural disaster warning system function, because it started sounding this ridiculous "your space station will imminently explode" type alarm when the quake hit. That's all good and well, but the thing went off in the midst of the earthquake while the world was ending, so the whole time that the alarm was sounding, I was just like, "F***, I know, I know!" For the most part, the quake felt a lot worse than it actually turned out to be, but tsunami warnings were issued, a point of concern since the beach is right across the street from my apartment. We decided to play it safe and move to higher ground (more for fear for our cars than for our personal well-being) and made the trek to her place in our pajamas at the break of dawn. A Tsunami Bomb track is the second song that comes on when I shuffle through my music on the drive over, which is ironic but not at all funny.

In the end, it sounded like everyone on the island it made it through the ordeal unscathed. We watched the news for a bit, went to sleep again and woke up a few hours later with the world back to normal. Not exactly my definition of an ideal Saturday morning, but hey, you can always make up sleep.

December, January (More Or Less)

Listening to:
Motion City Soundtrack
My Dinosaur Life

-Blocked two shots clean on two consecutive possessions and got called for fouls on both of them. I promptly turned American and slammed the ball into the ground on the second one. I guess the referee got the message because I didn't get whistled for the rest of the game. Probably would have (and should have) been the first person to get called for a technical in the tournament's history.

-I bought a velvet skull. I suppose it makes about as much sense as the Frieza chair that I bought for my iPod.

-Some of these junior high students walk around the hallways pretending that they're ambulances. It's a little bit troubling. I stopped pretending that I was the Ghostbusters car when I was 5.

-I got through the weekend eating nothing but pizza and fried chicken. I may possibly die soon.

-You know how some cars have fuzzy dice hanging from their rear view mirrors? I saw a car with toddler size Jordan XIIIs hanging from its mirror. That's actually a pretty damn cool idea.

-I think I'm close to done buying stuff for the pad. If anything, I might purchase a heater to get me through January and February. Of course, I say that I'm through now, but I know that dart boards and lava lamps are coming.

-Discovered the wondrous establishment that is a Japanese internet cafe. You basically sit in a darkened cubicle and fuck around on the internet or read comics. Sort of like my old job, only with free soda and popcorn.

-Really considering getting a cat, I just don't want it to become a maniac who messes up my AV cables and pisses all over my shoes. Maybe a guinea pig is a better idea.

-I toy with the idea of buying a 2-foot Christmas tree, but the prospect of having a 2-foot Christmas tree is almost more depressing than having no Christmas tree. Maybe next year.

-Too busy to play Final Fantasy XIII and it's killing me.

-Worked on Christmas Day. Really weird, but I guess there's a first time for everything. I decided that it would be cool to be merry and all that good stuff, so I went to class dressed as Santa Claus. The third graders went absolutely bonkers. The second graders went absolutely silent. Guess you can't win 'em all.

-Good to finally see one of the boys after so long. J gets to talking about Burger King, and the word "angus" just makes me chuckle. Not sure why. I guess it's just that I haven't heard or used that particular word in 365 days or so.

-We all went to a shrine on New Years Day to pray and get fortunes and such. I'd never seen that many men with perms in my life. Kind of disturbing.

-Wait, so Sheamus is really WWE champ?

-Caved and rented Twilight because Tsutaya has 100 yen rentals going until the end of March. I don't usually doze off during movies, but I'm sleeping a half an hour into this one. My girlfriend stays up, but she isn't particularly impressed with the film, which may or may not make her the only female on the entire planet who isn't impressed with Twilight.

-Went for a run in the cold and my ears sort of felt like they were going to explode. Think I'm done running for a few months.

-The male teachers from school have a man-party of sorts to ring in the new year. I'd explain in detail, but there really isn't much to it. We get together and drink a several thousand beers and dine on raw horse meat.

-Didn't stop to consider that Avatar would likely be dubbed because subtitles would be pretty weird in conjunction with 3D. Oh well. Sigourney Weaver speaking in Japanese sounds exactly like how I always imagined Sigourney Weaver speaking in Japanese would. The movie itself was pretty awesome.

-I'm leaving a department store when a little girl that I've never seen before, probably about 3 or 4 years old, comes up to me from behind and punches me in the ass. She simply waves when I look over at her. This would have seemed really weird to me a year ago, but nowadays? Not so much. I wave back and we go our separate ways.

Thanksgiving Day 09

Listening to:
Do As Infinity
Gates of Heaven

I guess that I was too busy adjusting to life in Japan to miss Thanksgiving when I first arrived here, but I'm really craving a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal this year. I never really thought too much about it, but given that I caved and flew home for Christmas last winter, this year will mark the first time that I'm really spending the holidays away from my friends and family. Not to say that I don't have friends and family down here, but Thanksgiving and Christmas don't quite mean the same thing in Japan, or in the case of Thanksgiving, it really may not mean anything at all. Nevertheless, I've got an abundance of things to be thankful for this year, so cheers to that. In the end, it's about you being fortunate and lucky enough to realize it, not the turkey and stuffing.

...but I'd really kill for some good turkey and stuffing right about now.

It Was A Good Day

Busy day at work, but in that satisfying way, where all your lessons run smoothly and all the other teachers ask for your help and seem to find you immensely useful, if only for one day. Capped things off by grabbing a copy of Tekken 6 on the way home.

I also briefly, briefly considered getting BAYONETTA, but logic prevailed in the end. I'll probably devote every one of my waking, non-working hours to Tekken for the next week or so.
Thoughts on the game later.

KANSAI

Not exactly sure why I always find it necessary to type that in caps. It just seems appropriate. We did the smart thing and hit hostels and cheaper inns to save a little dough this time around, but regardless, I'm done traveling for the year. I mean it this time.

Gion, where we spent two nights.

The famous Kiyomizu Temple.

Osaka. The place gets infinitely better once the sun goes down.

Takoyaki.

The view from the top of (the exorbitant reproduction of) Osaka Castle. Quite nice, actually.

Ordering that Kobe beef like Shaquille O'Neal.

Next Stop...

...KANSAI. Be back in a few.

「オーッホッホッホッホ!!」

It's Monday morning over here in Japan, but the weekend's really just beginning thanks to "Silver Week." We've got until Wednesday off, which makes for a whopping 5-day break from work. Apparently, the next time Japan gets this particular string of holidays is in 2015 (thanks, wiki), so I guess I should feel pretty fortunate that I happened to be around this year. What's weird is that I'm usually out traveling during these extended weekends, and as a result, I haven't been entirely sure what to do with myself at home over the past couple of days. For what it's worth, I did get a substantial bit of shopping done today: laundry detergent, milk, beef, green onions, eggs, shampoo, orange juice, Frieza's chair, etc.

Yes, in one of those odd impulse purchases that I'll undoubtedly have to explain in vain to house guests in the future, I ended up buying a フリーザ chair for my iPod.

Simpler Times

For whatever reason, I was perusing my old xanga blog the other day, and it really took me back. Don't get me wrong, I honestly don't miss xanga in the least, but I do miss a lot of the banter that when on between the boys back then. Just for kicks, I've taken the liberty of reposting a bunch of the golden nuggets that made me chuckle. A lot of the stuff is even funnier when taken out of context (and of course there's anything that R says, which doesn't make sense in any context).

LOL what if one day we were just at taco bell eating then all of a sudden onofre got up and starting kicking some guys ass. i wouldnt even spill my fruit punch.
-mike

i almost ran over Julian Sensley. that guy needs to learn how to use the crosswalk.
-me

We should go on a road trip this summer with a 10 lb. bag of trail mix, cause trail mix is a DEADLY WEAPON. When the shit goes down, you just pull out the mix- nothing is quite as devastating as that yummy blend of NUTS and RAISINS.
-me (shortly after watching the bonus video on the Rufio EP)

lol look linus said he loves boys
-mike

-onofre

Needless to say, I kicked that envelope's ass.
-me

-onofre

i think i'll also try driving around naked like chance. that seems like a good time.
-me

why is mikes page rated 18 and over. I can't go to his site.
-linus

It's kinda funny that the recording that plays when you call up Boost Mobile customer care is a black dude's voice. I half expected a Ludacris song to start playing when I got put on hold.
-me

man, i'd punch chance if he made me miss senses fail.
-onofre

Ok...I've been wondering about this for a while, but do you have to be a shitty driver to become a Costco member?
-me

speaking of gay, i did see you and chance order tortillas in a spinach dip once.
-mike

i took four straight classes once. it was the worst decision of my life. my stomach went crazy by the fourth one.
-onofre

If I don't shave for a few days, I've noticed that I begin to look sort of like Adam Morrison.
-me

subwoofers are fun. so are robots.
-mike

woah...is that girl in the game...geez.....that skirt is pretty short....all she has to do is stretch or pick up a pencil or something and its over!
-onofre (upon seeing a picture of Rikku in FFX-2)

-mike

Not to say that I'm stupid necessarily...just stupid during exams.
-me

AM all nighters are ex post facto claims for calling justifiability to next-day exhaustion.
-mike

i told you not to watch that shitty ass movie. it was the "king kong" of 1998. but at least king kong starred naomi watts.
-mike

King Kong also had that entire bug-sequence with the fucking 12 foot centipede.
-onofre

I knocked the fuck out on my doorstep and I think Ashtray came by and ate my taco while I was sleeping.
-me

Hello Kitty toaster. HER FACE IS BRANDED ONTO THE FUCKING TOAST. It's the bomb, baby.
-me

die scum
-mike (upon learning that I was feeling sick)

You'd be surprised how many times I try to crawl into that plastic tunnel of the play pen like at Burger King and get stuck cuz I'm too big.
-J

apparently she hasn't divulged her sex life to you yet. believe me, i was scarred for life.
-cr8

the other day some random guy tried to hit me with an egg while i was walking home. he was in a car passing by and missed me by a couple of feet.
-linus

what a frickin' waste of protein
-cr8 (in response to above news of linus being assaulted by egg)

Fermp!
-R

bing!
-R

ill have to go with the no panties.
-R

Eat pizza!
-R

You need something more powerful. Like Shaka Zulu
-R

You like dags tommy?
Dags, you like dags?
Dags, tommy dags!
How'bout mi caraven
-R

-mike

I always see the phoenix on your xanga and just now I thought of charles barkley and his shoes. remember those? those were sooo nice. i never had a pair though, only my sister. I had instead my fucking smooth british knights.
-onofre
"I had instead my fucking smooth british knights." Such a sick quote. If I ever write a movie script, that bad boy is definitely going to be in it.

なす!!!

I can't help but love how country my school is. I can teach a class, come back to the teacher's office, play with the dog, buy some vegetables, then go and teach another class. I ended up buying some eggplants from the vegetable lady without really taking into account the fact that I had no idea how to prepare them. So I did the next logical thing:

In this case, "the next logical thing" entailed snapping some photos of the eggplants next to my Eggplants. Tomorrow: eggplant mabo tofu. I smell disaster.

Urban Assault Vehicle

Switchin' whips like kicks. Traded in the MKII for a Honda.

Just kidding. The Orthia is just a loaner for a few days while my car is at the spa. The thing handles like a tank, sounds like a helicopter, and is green to boot, so I think it officially qualifies as a UAV. Rolling around in a war wagon is an interesting change of pace, but I'm already missing my JZX.

Homesick At English Camp

Day 1 - The kids aren't talking at all on the bus. That worries me a bit. • Turns out that we have ラジオ体操 at 7:00 AM every morning. It's pretty much aerobics at old people speed. I'm not real thrilled about it. • Only three of my students are attending the camp. None of the three are particularly keen on active participation, two of them I've never had actual conversations with before, and one of those two, Reina, I'm pretty sure legitimately dislikes me. Not in that shy Japanese "please leave me alone" way, but more of a "you make me sick, get away from me" sort of way. • It's dawned on me that I'm going to have to keep all of the boys in line by myself. So I get to be the mean guy with the flashlight who keeps everyone from having fun in the middle of the night. Probably not the best way to get the kids to like me.

Day 2 - Feels more like day 5. I'm already beat, but can't complain because so are the kids. • We're having breakfast when Shigehito, one of the junior high students, announces that he wants to have sex. I'm sure that most males are thinking the same thing at 14, but it takes a special breed of person to make that admission on day 2 of English camp over the breakfast table. Not sure whether to be frightened or encouraged by this enthusiasm. • The indoor slippers that they gave me are about three sizes too small. Trying to decide what's worse, the heat or the blisters forming on the sides of my toes. • The boys celebrate wildly when they find out that they have to clean the bathrooms. I didn't understand why until I found out that it was an excuse for them to spray each other with water. • I can't stop sweating. Wish they'd turn on the air in this bitch.

Day 3 - We took the kids to the local museum and the beer factory. I know that it doesn't make a lot of sense to take a bunch of children to a beer factory, but we did it. • The boys borrow my camera while we tour the museum. Naturally, they immediately proceed to take detailed pictures of the stuffed horse's junk. • I got pulled aside by the camp director because Sakura was starting to follow me everywhere. I'm used to junior high girls getting clingy and trying to get me fired, but this was the first time that one of the higher-ups actually thought that it presented a legitimate problem. • Yelled at three of the junior high kids because they were up snooping around the girls' rooms past lights out. Motohiro and Daichi jumped into the same bed when I sent them to their room. Funny thing is that they were still there when I went to wake them up in the morning.

Day 4 - I miss my car. • The older kids were being disinterested and rude to the American instructor during the night session, so I gave a stern talk to the entire group after class was over (yes, I've become a mean bastard). I'd like to say that I was simply sticking up for the teacher, but I think that I may have also been indirectly venting some of my personal frustrations as a foreign language instructor myself. But as they say, I wasn't angry with the kids, just disappointed. A little while later, I was sitting around thinking of all the things that I said to them and of all of the things that I should have said to them, when Wahiro pulled me into one of the rooms where the boys were shooting dumb videos and tried to get me to join in. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit, but I'm pretty sure that he was trying to cheer me up.

Day 5 - Afternoon hike, which was a nice change of pace. • The term "walking stick" comes up. Daichi points at Kaito, not exactly the slimmest cat at camp, and says "Walking steak?" I don't get how some of these kids can not understand their lessons but still snap on each other in English so hard. • Kaito gets into a tree somehow, and all of the ants that live in it start panicking and bail with their eggs. • 「先生、カッコイイんですけど。」I don't think much of it when the girls say it, but for one reason or another, it means a lot coming from the boys. • Junkichi, who's an absolute nightmare during the day, knocks on my door at midnight and says that he can't sleep because he's lonely. He's so busy getting into shit most of the time that you almost forget he's just a 10-year old kid who's liable to be scared of the monsters under his bed.

Day 6 - I think I've hit a wall. Instead of warning each kid about every single thing, I've been letting more of the little stuff slide. I guess it's that I'm tired myself and can understand why some of the kids might want to goof off a little. • Blindfold direction game in the afternoon (left, right, go!, etc.) and Shigehito runs full speed into a tree. Too busy laughing with everyone else to feel particularly bad. • S'mores and High School Musical to close out the night, and it's actually starting to feel like a proper camp.

Day 7 - Mei, the tinniest one at camp, thinks it's funny to mimic me during meals. I eat my food as fast as I can until she starts laughing and can't keep up. Cute kid. • Hinako tries to toss an empty steel can into the trash but instead ends up tagging Ibuki in the head. Ibuki bleeds for a bit, but he'd be okay. • We give the kids the afternoon to themselves at the park. Fumiya, Amon and Riku were following me around, so I end up paying their admission so they can see the aquarium. Their faces are absolutely glowing as they run from tank to tank, and I'm immediately glad that I parted with the cash to get them in. Fumiya makes sure that I'm never more than a few steps behind. Before long, they're the little brats who run around and get into everyone else's pictures, but it's kind of funny for a change because they're my little brats.

Day 8 - So tired that I literally feel like I'm floating. Just 4 hours of sleep last night, but better than the 3 that I had the night before. • The elementary kiddies do an activity where they have to cut out pictures of foods that they like and paste them on a paper plate. Aya: ice cream, cookies, pizza, grapes. Yuki: pizza, hamburger, ice cream, oranges. Morita: bicycle, Miller Lite. • I forgot my gym shoes at home, so I end up playing basketball with the junior high kids in my socks. Not smart, but such is the cost of bonding with the boys. My left ankle is killing me. • Last bath. The boys are jackasses as usual, being obscene with the hoses and doing laps in the onsen-style pool. I let them have their fun and tell them not to be late for their night class.「はーい~」they promptly answer, in perfect unison, earnest. • During the evening activity, Reina, who hated me on Monday, sits next to me.

Day 9 - After the morning exercise, little Junkichi walks over to me, takes both of my hands in his, holds them for a few seconds, then walks off. • Closing ceremony. Everyone cries. • The staff does their best to get everybody onto the buses, but nobody wants to leave. • On the ride home, the kids on my bus are already calling the kids on the other bus with their cell phones, and Daichi hands me his. I tell Shige to がんばって and promise Hinako that I'll come back next summer if I can. • I don't cry, but I wear my shades all the way home because I think that I might.

Finally over. I make sure to get everything that I've been craving for the past 9 days: quarter pounder with cheese, fries, ice cream, sleep.
